My Favorite All Time Film From the 1970's! (by ii-22)
John Beck is so sexy in this film. Susan and Marie were adorable. Love the Sidney Sheldon twists and turns Master of the Game is a favorite of mine too . Hauntingly beautiful soundtrack-the best ever! The soundtrack definitely adds so much to the passion of this film. And what a change for Susan after the Rocky Horror Picture show. I have seen The Other Side of Midnight 14 times and it gets better every time.I thinkthis is a masterpiece and yes there are some very trite lines however, its a beautiful love story and reminiscent of the 1970's and the way we all were back then. I don't <more>
feel that all films have to be so intellectually stimulating that the critics will like them. This was so much better than Star Wars to me. I adore this film. Love it Love it! You got my vote! Wonderful forever!
I love the movie and Marie-France Pisier and the theme song. I saw the movie when it first came out and have never stop thinking of it. Its my favorite movie. I forgot the name of the movie and have been looking for it for years and finally came on television the other night and was so excited.
Opera or soap opera? (by ScenicRoute)
The ending is almost operatic in its perfection, but not quite I would prefer the last 3 minutes just excised. However, we can't expect either Sidney Sheldon if the ending is true to the book - I have no idea or Hollywood to "get" true "Italianate" endings.Anyway, I found the story quite believable and the plot twists effective. And the acting is great. Marie-France Pisier is grandly, operatic - and entirely convincing - as the forgotten lover who will not let go. Susan Sarandon was also excellent as a creatively brilliant corporate-type who latches on to the wrong <more>
man. and Clu Gulager is perfect as a squeaky-clean corporate guy why would one want to be any other way? except for his way-too '70s hair-do but then that problem pervades the movie, which is set from 1939-47 . Now about John Beck: why don't I know more about him? He played the "dick" not in the detective sense superbly - letting his "little head" lead him about until the movie's end, while his "big head" is blithely amoral and absolutely oblivious to the emotional needs of women - something that Italian opera composers exploit so well, as does this movie. And the parade of cynically amoral, seedily corrupt Europeans gives the movie real authenticity as a portrait of the decadence that enveloped wartime Vichy France and its immediate aftermath, and, unfortunately, has gotten worse throughout all Europe including the UK since then.So this movie is not the "BOMB" that Siskel & Ebert or whoever wrote my 1998 movie guide say it is - it is not dreck, but quite a fine, compelling drama, set in the sexual turmoil that was World War II.
This movie has it all....great love story even though it is cheesy sometimes....action....revenge and a sad but realistic ending.....why it was not a big hit I don't know but I will always like it and wish it was out on DVD......I wish the movie channels would show it more often...It seems that when this movie was released the studio promotion was not there.....they didn't spend any money on it.....When I think back on all the movies that are love stories this one always comes to mind and "the Summer of 42".... there is just something about the simple way they were written <more>
and how they show up on screen... anyway this will always be one of my favorites cant stop watching it....There is a another movie that comes to mind that was not promoted much and is not out on DVD either and that is "Cinderella Liberty" a James Caan and Marsha Mason movie that is great....if you like love stories and some comedy this movie is special....Eli Wallach is also in the movie as a Navy Chief that is losing his rank and getting washed out of the Navy....James Caan trades places with him and this does go on and both live happily ever after.....10 out of 10 on this movie.
The Other Side of Midnight is often dismissed as being so bad it's good or a lurid soapy drama. I can't condemn the film that easily. When I first saw this I was a young man fascinated with the sex scenes which today seem very, very mild. Is the DVD a different cut? Perhaps. But whenever the film came on Showtime or TV I would watch it. Why the interest? Well, there are many elements that make this film interesting. First of all, the actors. Susan Sarandon, John Beck, Marie France Pisier and even the actors in small roles really brought something to this despite some of the lousy <more>
dialogue. Also, the locations. Even if they aren't authentic, the sets seem great and the outdoor shots beautiful. The film switches back & forth between America and Europe and you can't help but become absorbed by the differences in the sets and speech.I think it is also fun to see Noelle's innocence in the beginning and watch her become this bloodthirsty & ruthless person who will do anything to get what she wants. It's a role Joan Collins would have died for! Some of it is very dated today. I recently watched it and laughed every time I saw Marie in her clunky, tall platform heels. Every drag queen would love to have a pair just like that. So, I think people will find some of this very dated and perhaps old fashioned but there is no denying the thrill of watching some of this drama unfold on screen.
During the summer of '77, I didn't get to see as many movies as I had been used to seeing the past three years. The only other movie I saw that summer was "Star Wars."So here I am, 17 years old, and I go to this with my Grandmother and an aunt, cause, lets face it, this is what is a classic 'chick flick'. I dislike that expression cause it makes it seem like you have to be a woman to gain any enjoyment, and the only movie I'd personally attach that label to is "Thelma and Louise." Just cause the main character of a movie is a woman does not mean its not <more>
about a human being who is completely unbelievable.Anywho, I saw this again last week, and it may as well be 900 years old. They don't make trash like this anymore, but maybe that's because they don't write trash novels anymore. Gone are Harold Robbins, Jackie Susann and the author of this, Sidney Sheldon. We have Jackie Collins, but her stuff ends up on television I think . Why has the world given up on the trash novel, the one you read on the beach or on a plane? This has it all, like the master checklist..epic length, betrayal, a lot of over- and under-acting, revenge, nudity, sex, self-abortion, international settings, a trial, an actress, a firing squad, a bitch, a virgin, a colorless leading man and even a surprise ending. 8/10.

a movie version of a Sidney sheldon classic. (by triple8)
Love,Hate. Trust, Betrayel and Deception. This incredible novel by Sidney Sheldon was one of my favorte's growing up, it took me awhile but I finnaly saw the movie version. Although there were some problems which I will get into, this was still an amazing tale and I'd recomend anyone reading this review who HASN'T seen it go rent it.As with many great books turned movies there can be problems and this movie isn't perfect. Much of the beauty of this incredible novel is atmospheric. Sidney Sheldon is an amazing story teller and it simply wasn't possible for the movie to pick <more>
up everything. This is actually a tale that was made to be a book, it would be very difficult to do the novel justice without making the movie about 10 hours long. Also, the movie doesn't even BEGIN to pick up the depths of the characters particularly Noelle Page. What I liked so much about the book is you feel you know all these characters-and knowing them you truely begin to care about all of them even the ones with the darker sides to them. And the movie wasn't able to create the same atmosphere as the novel, particularly in capturing the lush beauty of Greece. That said-still better then many who read the book would think. All characters were well acted and the movie did the best it could in the time it had. There are also some incredible flying scenes as one reviewer made reference to. Still-this would make an EXCELLENT remake that any Sheldon fan would go see. I'd love to see it remade with Brad pitt as Larry. Nicole Kidman as Noelle Page. Sandra Bullock as Catherine. Gabriel Byrn as Constantiner Demires.Just a thought.
