First off let me start by saying that I am not a writer, so please forgive my poor attempt at a review. As I patiently sat waiting for the screening of A Perfect Ending, I thought to myself, this is going to be a great movie. I did not expect to see a movie that would awaken all of my emotions and touch my soul. It is a film with so many messages any woman or man need to explore and assess if they are being and experiencing all they were made for. Generally when I go to see films at a festival my expectations are set pretty low. Most are fair to middlin' and many just don't cut the mustard. Occasionally, however, I catch a film that not only captures my mind while I'm watching it but that lives on and continues to unfold in my mind for days after. Such was my experience with A Perfect Ending. I saw it at an LGBT festival so I knew there was a lesbian angle. What I found with A Perfect Ending was a story that had so much more depth and breadth that I left the theater thinking ... a lot.Nicole Conn masterfully weaves this complex story, delicately dipping into an array of subplots and parallel story lines. That she weaves a complex story is one thing, that she does so leveraging some unique and rather fascinating storytelling mechanisms makes the film that much more interesting to me.Beyond the graceful storytelling structure there are the superb performances from a very talented cast.Several great character turns give wonderful flavor to the story. Cathy DeBuono delivers an amusingly intense performance; Mary Wells' comedic timing and perfectly timed expressions bring laughter at several key moments and then there's the superb Morgan Fairchild whose very appearance on the screen resulted in applause. John Heard delivers a great performance as the detached, boozy husband with a dark secret of his own.Finally there are the two magnificent lead actresses. You have never seen her like this. To watch the evolution of Niven's character of Rebecca is to see a woman become completely dismantled. From her clothing and hairstyle to the way she walks and even holds her facial expressions - at the outset Rebecca is wound so tightly that one might expect she would snap at any time. Instead, we see her soften, unravel and blossom into a magnificent, luminous and powerful woman.Any woman should see this film and then ask herself - have you found your passion? Very few film productions reach deep enough to cause such a delicious distress to ones daily routine. And by this I mean been kidnapped emotionally for a few days by a story and its characters. The mere fact that one keeps returning over and over to certain scenes with such thirst, makes me acknowledge that the Director has undeniably connected on personal basis with my needs, desires, search, dreams, fantasies, etc. It takes a very gifted, perceptive and empathic individual to have such a capacity to reach.Although personally the dialogue did not strike me as potent as that of "Claire <more>
of the Moon" or "Elena Undone", obviously because of the storyline, that timid and brief dialogue between the main characters had certainly a je ne sais quoi that keeps one engage. The ambiance throughout the film was gorgeously crafted and the music WOW was sublime.

If you can, please view it again, and try not to analyze so much and feel the story instead. I love this movie for all the reasons other viewers have given. After seeing this movie, I am a forever fan of both Barbara Niven and Jessica Clark. I can name only a few on-screen couples that can take your breath away with their chemistry -- they are in that small group. Add to that, their very moving performances filled with touches of brilliance and you find yourself totally swept up into their love story to the point of actually believing they could be a real couple. this movie. And I thank them from the bottom of my heart because I now have a treasure to revisit, over and over, because of them. I wish the same could be said about the writer and director, Nicole Conn. She had gold in the palm of her hand and all she had to do was shape it and mold it into the greatest same-sex movie of all time. Instead, she chose to make this movie into an artsy showcase of her "creativity" while totally disregarding the feelings of the viewers. If she hadn't wasted so much time on close-ups of focused and out of focus objects, Paris in the white room suffering from guilt, Rebecca and Mason fighting over his molesting her daughter which was completely pointless , Paris working on her art, Paris at work being with men as a hooker disgusting and unnecessary , Paris having sex with her boyfriend/husband also unnecessary , Ms. Conn could have, instead, spent that precious time developing the strong bond between Rebecca and Paris with their own words describing the growing love, passion, respect and need for each other. Alas, she didn't. She chose to leave much of that to the viewers' imagination while forming a bottomless pit of questions. Like, why didn't she show Paris informing Rebecca that she had left the service? Rebecca's greatest dream for her. Why didn't Paris ever say "I love you" to Rebecca even though we all knew she did. Why were the couple's words to each other during their love scenes drowned out by music or kept so low in sound that no one could hear them. And here's the biggest why of all. WHY make the ending the way it was made? To me, that is NOT a perfect ending. That is a terrible ending. And it could have been so easily avoided by changing the ending to one of pure joy for our beloved couple. Rebecca, right there by Paris' side, at the gallery showing of Paris' art. Both beaming happily, holding hands for all the world to see. Imagine the power that Nicole Conn possessed while writing this story. She could have chosen a more positive, more powerful message with this type of ending. Love triumphs over all. Any love. Even same-sex love. Instead, viewers who genuinely love this movie cannot watch it over and over to enjoy the love and the passion displayed between the beautiful leads without feeling the dark cloud hovering overhead. And that's not fair. There should have at least been two different endings made for the viewers to pick from. That would have been the fairest. Also, at the beginning of every "bonus scene" that was cut from the final film version that was released available on the DVD version , Nicole Conn's voice can be heard saying how she hated to lose that particular scene but it had to be cut due to limited time. My advice to her: Cut, instead, all the artsy close-ups, all the unnecessary junk you put in and you would have had plenty of time for those beautiful extra scenes of Rebecca and Paris being together and lighting up the screen!
This film was recommended to me by a member of family and i had not heard about it before today, i took the time out and watched it and i must say it was far from a waste of time. Although at first you are confused by multiple cut scenes of pens and main characters curled into a ball which i think they could have halved throughout the movie and they would still give the same effect, In the end it all came together to make sense in a beautiful way. There was a good twist at the end which had me with tears at the corner of my eyes and wishing for the best to come of the tragedy that had <more>

While I cannot completely follow some enthusiastic reviews here, I have to admit that I am intrigued how this little movie seduces its audience, despite a small budget 175k is really very small , and despite a story that may not go very well for everyone, because it is some kind of 'Denver Clan 2012' ;- But, intriguing enough, we follow easily the introduction, where a woman in her fifties, called Rebecca, wealthy, with three grown-up children and a husband nobody can love, tells her friends that she never climaxed and has mostly forgotten everything about sex. lesbians of course ? persuade her to try a service that provides - a prostitute who can help her to finally climax of course again ? . Now, this seems a bigger bit far-fetched, but it is delivered believable enough not to stand up and run away.After that, when it comes to an appointment, everything goes wrong for Rebecca, although or even because the rented hooker is young and extremely beautiful and also skilled in the art of seduction. Rebecca is afraid of her own boldness and declines any interaction. But, we know it, it is the tentative beginning of a love story, and this love story isn't a common one. Now many things are going on there and we learn that this is not a movie from Francois Truffaut or R.W. Fassbinder. And it isn't a movie about the troubles of homosexuality for an elderly woman. These aspects are completely and thankfully left out. Instead, it is a movie about overcoming a common fate of women, about how your life has been passed by and you miss something real important for a sudden. This fate is of course not limited only to wealthy women, but the movie is located in a wealthy social class, and therefore it looks soapy in some of it's family-related side stories. But on the other hand, there is a distinct feeling for real emotional struggle.Here comes the main actor in, Barbara Niven, who has the courage to play a woman on the edge of a wasted life, to show herself naked, together with a 30 years younger beauty Niven is born 1953 . And she never fails, you will be surprised, not only how good she looks, but how authentic she is.The beautiful hooker in turn, played by Jessica Clark, places an attitude like Maggie Q in 'Nikita', when it comes to dialog, and that is sometimes too overused. She seems always slightly unreal, like being not really from this world, even while she is suffering from things happened in her past. I wonder if Director Nicole Conn intended that. And I wonder how Jessica Clark is in private. Cinematically, the movie is solid modern upper B-grade with some nice ideas to break the narrative continuity for watchers who need a bit more than the standard menu. It looks always good and bright, and focuses wisely on every Detail of Barbara Niven's artful play.While a hardcore lesbian will spit on this movie because it's too beautiful and calm, someone who wants to follow a butterfly eventually starting to use it's wings as implied at the end , will be fully satisfied. 8 stars out of sheer earned sympathy.
I started watching, as a guy, to be titillated; but found myself falling in love with the two main characters - especially Niven's character Rebecca . So often, beautiful women have hard, or too 'sculptured' faces and bodies . But these two, esp. Rebecca, had kind - and sweet faces, that were at the same time stunning, hypnotic.
